Exterior Maintenance Tips
Simple steps to extend the life of your paint job and keep your home looking its best.
Four Things Every Homeowner Should Do
Annual Inspection
Walk around your home each spring looking for signs of wear: peeling paint, cracks in caulk, loose trim, or discolored areas. Catching problems early prevents bigger repairs later.
Keep Gutters Clean
Clogged gutters cause water to back up and damage siding, soffits, and trim. Clean them at least twice a year — once in spring and once in fall.
Monitor Landscaping
Keep plants, mulch, and soil at least 6 inches away from siding. Direct water contact and trapped moisture accelerate paint deterioration.
Watch for Mold & Mildew
In DFW's humidity, mold can grow on shaded sides of your home. Clean with a mild solution of water and bleach (1:3 ratio) if you spot discoloration.
Do This
Touch up minor scratches before they spread
Re-caulk gaps around windows and doors every 2-3 years
Power wash your exterior every 1-2 years
Keep trees and branches trimmed away from the house
Check sprinkler heads to ensure they don't spray directly on siding
Clean AC units and outdoor fixtures that sit near painted surfaces
Vent bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans outside, not into the attic
Avoid This
Pressure wash at high psi — this can damage paint and force water behind siding
Use harsh chemicals or bleach on painted surfaces without dilution
Stack materials against the house — this traps moisture
Allow sprinkler water to consistently hit the exterior
Ignore small cracks or peeling — they spread quickly in Texas heat
Use abrasive scrubbers on painted surfaces
